ADHD Diagnosis

Why is a diagnosis is important

Getting diagnosed with ADHD as an adult can bring life-changing benefits by providing clarity and access to appropriate support. Many adults with ADHD struggle with challenges such as forgetfulness, difficulty focusing, impulsivity, and procrastination—often blaming themselves for these issues. Without a diagnosis, these individuals may experience low self-esteem, chronic stress, anxiety, or depression, making it difficult to navigate personal and professional life.

A diagnosis helps adults better understand their experiences, allowing them to reframe struggles not as personal failures but as symptoms of a neurodevelopmental condition. This shift in perspective promotes self-compassion and helps individuals focus on strategies for managing their ADHD more effectively.

Diagnosis also opens the door to tailored treatment options, including therapy, medication, coaching, and lifestyle adjustments. With the right tools, adults with ADHD can improve time management, organisation, and relationships, enhancing their personal and professional lives. Additionally, workplaces and schools may offer accommodations once ADHD is formally recognized, making it easier to meet goals without unnecessary stress.

Addressing ADHD is also crucial for mental health. Undiagnosed ADHD is linked to higher risks of anxiety, depression, and substance use. Proper diagnosis equips individuals with resources to thrive, helping them achieve a more balanced, fulfilling life.

How it works

The process included 4 parts - Screening, Assessment, Diagnosis and Report

The screening includes answering some initial questions and can take 1-1.5hours. From this you will then be advised whether it is worth you going ahead with the full assessment or not.

Typically people do a screening before going on to the full assessment. This is because the assessment is lengthy as it not only assesses ADHD but also includes a full mental health assessment as to diagnosis ADHD you have to rule out any other cause - it can be done in 1 or 2 parts (up to 2 hours each) and it also includes bringing a family member to part of it to answer questions about childhood (if possible).

However, if you did want to go straight to the assessment then I do not require the screening to be done first.

After the assessment a diagnosis and report will be provided in writing. The reports can be lengthy and provide a breakdown of the assessment and what it uncovered. This serves as official documentation and can be submitted to schools and workplaces to help you receive the support you need to Manage your ADHD.
